August 2024 Newsletter

In July, we had a great morning of asana, fellowship (with many yummy snacks!), and discussing the obstacles to the practice during our quarterly conference. We talked about the obstacles using the framework of Sutras 1.30-1.33 from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Is there something you're curious about and want to chat about at our next conference? Let us know!

We also would love to hear about your thoughts on our Fall Programming.

Tristana

Did you know that one of the key features of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the "Tristana" method?

The Tristana method is based on three pillars: breath, pose/bandha, and drishti -or gazing points; Tristana aims to create a focused experience, so that our Asana (postural) practice transforms from a mere movement modality to a moving meditation.

The Tristana method is implemented throughout your whole Ashtanga practice, with each posture and transition having a precise breath (whether it is an inhale or exhale), specific body alignment, as well as a set gazing point.  The Tristana method helps in minimizing external distractions and bringing the awareness back to ourselves.

A few tidbits to get to know Yuko:

  • A sutra that resonates with her:

    • Practice with consistency and earnestness (1.14) - I tell that myself before dropbacks

  • A pose she's gaining new appreciation for:

    • The ones you balance on your butt like Upavista Konasana B, oh so fun!

  • Favorite farmers’ market vendor:

    • Farmer Taki-san's shop with all his Japanesy veggies

  • A cue that has stuck with her

    • I always hear the jump back cues in Christiane's voice in my head

Want to meet Yuko in person? Take Fundamentals on Sundays at 8:15 am every week (and keep an eye out for when she's teaching Half-Primary!)

  • What brings you to the mat?

    • The focus that the practice brings helps me feel calm and more present throughout the rest of the day.

  • A pose you’re gaining new appreciation for?

    • I’ve recently been finding more and more nuance in Downward Facing Dog.

  • Favorite farmers’ market vendor/spot in the U District?

    • So many favorites at the farmers’ market, but Junebug (kimchi) is usually my first stop.

  • A cue that has stuck with you?

    • The cue to press the hands flat against the mat in forward folds even if it means bending the knees deeply.
