September 2024 Newsletter
It's hard to believe the official start of fall is just around the corner, but so many signs of autumn are here. Some leaves are starting to change color, the weather is starting to cool (good thing we generate so much tapas at the Shala!), and kids are heading back to school.
Are you ready to head back to school? There's always something we can discover when we show up on the mat, but perhaps you're looking to deepen your learning in a different way... consider joining the 2025 Yoga Teacher Training Cohort! (Pictured above is our 2024 Yoga Teacher Training cohort after the first class meeting).
Our YTT is a 200-hour training based on a progressive approach to Ashtanga vinyasa yoga. The program aims to support you to become a skillful yoga teacher, as well as to deepen your personal practice -fostering self-awareness, community, and compassion towards self and others.
Tristana: Breath
The Tristana method is based on three pillars: breath, bandha, and drishti.
Here are a few ways the breath supports the practice of Ashtanga Yoga:
The linking of breath and movement (vinyasa) creates connection between mind and body that brings balance, focus, and relaxation
Breathing provides your body with oxygen and removes waste
Breath control creates strength and can help channel energy
Ashtanga utilizes "breath with sound" to intensify the benefits of the breath. Start by sealing the lips and breathing through the nose. Engage a slight constriction at the base of the throat and with even inhalation and exhalation, create the sound of "waves on the beach" or a "breeze through the trees".

A few tidbits to get to know Ella:
A sutra that resonates with them:
Or the concentration on subtle sense perceptions can cause steadiness of the mind. (2.3)
A pose they're gaining new appreciation for:
Dandasana is the asana I'm currently gaining new appreciation for. Finding a strong, energetic lift through the spine is a lovely way to begin the seated postures.
Favorite spot in the U District:
Henry Art Gallery - who isn't excited about free art? They have a café with cheap eats and a sunny courtyard too.
A cue that has stuck with her
Chest proud - I heard this both in the UK and at the Shala. It's a good reminder to bring some confidence to your body language, especially in Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana D!
Be sure to take Ashtanga Fundamentals with Ella, they frequently teach Fridays at noon!

What brings you to the mat?
My journey with yoga began about 15 years ago at the YMCA near my home, and I have been in love with it ever since. It has brought me immense positive energy and noticeable improvements in my overall wellness.
A pose you’re gaining new appreciation for?
Sirsasana C is the pose that I gained new appreciation for as it's challenging and powerful beyond its appearance.
Favorite food spot?
Mango pearl with coconut milk smoothie from King Noodle in the International District.
A cue that has stuck with you?
I struggle with surrendering my chest in back bending, finding it very challenging, but I'm confident that I'll master it someday.
