November 2024 Newsletter

Last month's conference had the best snacks, the best community, and the best conversation about breath. If you missed it, there will be plenty of opportunities moving forward to continue to explore breath work as we expand our pranayama offerings. Keep your eyes on the schedule!

Tristana: Drishti

The Tristana method is based on three pillars: breath, bandha, and drishti.

Drishti are the gazing points that help guide your focus for a more meditative practice, provide alignment cues and balance, and aid in self-awareness.

There are nine drishti:

  • Angustha – thumb

  • Brumadhya – third eye

  • Nasagra – tip of nose

  • Parsva – right side

  • Parsva – left side

  • Nabhi – navel

  • Hastagra – hand

  • Padhagra – big toe

  • Urdhva – up

  • What brings you to the mat?

    • The rhythm of movement, breath, and feeling unites my mind and body. Each practice session leaves me mentally and physically refreshed. I become aware of my emotional state—whether relaxed, tense, or distracted—and attend to it. It's fascinating to observe the varying sensations and progress across different sessions, witnessing my body's autonomous adjustments without conscious intervention.

  • A pose you’re gaining new appreciation for?

    • Lotus!

  • Favorite farmers’ market vendor/spot in the U District?

    • No favorite one - they're all my favorite!

  • A cue that has stuck with you?

    • Follow you heart

Teacher Feature: Sherry Q.

A few tidbits to get to know Sherry:

  • A sutra that resonates with them:

    • Yoga Sutra 2.35 states: "Ahimsa pratishthayam tat vaira-tyagah", which translates to "In the presence of one firmly established in non-violence, all hostilities cease." This sutra emphasizes the importance of practicing non-violence in thought, word, and action, and to yourselves.

  • A pose they're gaining new appreciation for:

    •  Janu sirsasana C really gets my appreciation. I used to not understand why I am doing this, however, one day when I was in this asana, I felt a very deep hip strech from it, and it feels really good.  [🙂] I never knew its actually a hip strech asana, it was interesting.

  • Favorite spot at the U District farmer's market:

    • There is a bakery stand at the beginning of the farmer’s market that sells those little small french dessert. Those were delicious!

  • A cue that has stuck with them:

    • Relax the neck really stuck with me and I am trying my best not to use my neck. Also trying the best to use my back leg during standing poses and square my hips.
